Other things I paint

"I never know what kind of things
people are going to need painted, but I love a challenge!"

Portrait Of A Boy And His Dog
I was commissioned by a couple, to paint this portrait of their four year old boy and his dog, after they had recently lost their family dog. It is painted on a 24"x 36" canvas. To see a photo of the entire painting please go to my "home" page by clicking on the tab above or on the link on the left side of this page. Thanks.

The "sign" part of the painting

A Painting On Canvas Of A Meaningful Place To A Newlywed Couple
I was hired by the husband in a recently married couple, to paint the picture below depicting the bridge on which he proposed to his bride on a cold winter's day. He hired me to paint the 18" by 24" painting and supplied me with a photograph to use as a reference to execute the painting. Do you have a special place that you would like a painting of?   Another photo of this painting can be seen by clicking on the "Home" tab above.

A Refurbished Sign
I put the sign shown in the photos below on my "Other Things I Paint" page instead of my "Hand Lettering" page because it's a little bit more than just a plain lettered sign. I also wanted to show what can be done with an old hand painted sign. The first picture below shows how the sign looked approximately 15 to 20 years after I had painted it. As you can see the sun and weather had faded the sign over time. The following pictures show the sign after I had painted over the lettering and pictorial to bring the colors of the sign back to it's original new condition.

Backdrop for a Dance Recital

The theme of the dance recital was "Heroes." I was hired to paint these examples of American heroes on muslin cloth to be used as a backdrop for the show. The first picture below shows them set up on the stage with my son standing between them to show their actual size.
Believe it or not they were painted with a 49 cent foam rubber paint brush.

Radiator Cover, Under The Hood, Hot Rod Ford Pickup!
Here are some close up views of "The Witch Doctor" that I have featured on my "Pinstriping" page. Go there and check out the rest of the truck!

I put my hand in the picture below to show the size of the painting. This was painted entirely with a brush with no airbrushed shading.
And I wanted to show this stage of the painting where I only had it drawn on with chalk before painting.
Below are a few photos of the finished product all cleaned up and under the hood of the truck "The Witch Doctor". Pictures of the truck may be seen by clicking on the "Flames" tab at the top of the page.

A TRIBUTE TO A DAD
The children of a longtime loyal customer of mine asked me to paint this tribute on the side of one of their tow trucks, in memory of their father. I felt very lucky to have been asked to paint this Marine logo for them. He was a good friend of mine and a good man.

This picture shows that it's on the back door of the truck. It's in the same place on the other side as well.

Harley Motorcycle Tank
A painting using the technique of airbrushing and hand painting together. This clown matches the tatoo my customer had on his arm.
Shown below, in progress.
Shown below, finished.
A nice closeup. Looks pretty shiny to me!

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth Hot Rod Monster!
Here are a few pictures of my tribute to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, the King of the 50's and 60's hot rod drawings. I painted it on the trunk lid of my friend/customer's rat rod.

Here's where things start to get really cool. Below are a couple of pictures of the R.C. car that my customer had me paint to match his actual rat rod, monster and all! That was a great idea that he had!

A close up below of the monster on the R.C. car.
And finally both of the cars together!

A SNOWMOBILE TRAILER
The owner of this snowmobile trailer hired me to paint this picture of his snowmobile that he hauled in this trailer. The picture is a combination of hand painting and airbrushing. The snow was done with a sponge!

The Ski-doo logo on the side of the trailer is also hand painted.

Below is a picture of the same trailer. It shows the owner's previous snowmobile. The above pictures show how I was able to make changes to the painting to show his newer model sled.

Harley Davidson Tank
I hand painted the lettering and "filigree" on this Harley tank in the mid 1990's

1968 Firebird
This Firebird belongs to my brother Richie. The graphics on this car are painted using the same technique as painting a flame job. Richie has been an automotive painter all his life. He is very well known for his work in Central New England, especially in the hot rod scene. He and I painted this entire car together, not just the graphics. Please excuse the poor quality of the pictures. We painted this car before there were digital cameras and I scanned these into my computer from some old photos from a film camera.

A Mounted Salmon
This is the first and only fish I ever painted for someone...so far! I wasn't sure of the coloring of a King Salmon, so I used several pictures as reference material. It was different and fun to do. I never know what people are going to ask me to paint for them! By the way, that's a yard stick taped to the easel above the fish. Big Fish!

Here's a "before" picture of the fish.

Snowmobile Trailer
I painted this picture of my customer's son on his snowmobile. It's a combination of hand painting with a brush and airbrushing. The snowmobile in the picture was in the trailer at the time and I used a photo of it to paint the mural.
The other side of the trailer showing the father and son on their sleds. I used a couple of photos supplied by the customer to use as reference material to get a likeness of the father and son.

The snowmobiles in the trailer. It came in handy to have them right there to look at for some of the finer details that didn't show in the photos that I used for the reference material.

A Mack Bulldog!
I painted "Fifi" and this pinstriping on the back of a Mack "R Model" truck  in the early 1980's, before the advent of digital cameras. Please excuse the "grainy" look of the pictures. It's due to the fact that I scanned these photos into my computer from an old print from a film camera.

THE REAR OF A SNOWMOBILE TRAILER
The painting on the back of this snowmobile trailer is 100% airbrushed. Once again, I scanned these photos into my computer from an old print from a film camera, which explains the grainy look of the pictures.

PAINTING ON CANVAS OF A FAVORITE VACATION SPOT
This painting is on a 24" by 36" canvas. I rendered it from a photo. Would you like to have a painting of your favorite place?  Maybe even your own home or place of business?

REPLICA OF AN OLD TIN SIGN
My customer loved this old tin sign so much that he had me create copies for him. I hand painted them on pieces of sign aluminum. This first picture shows the replica next to the original sign.

And this next picture shows that I had to make THREE of them!

A "PORTABLE MURAL" ON MASONITE!
As you can see, this is not really a mural. It's actually just a fairly large painting. I did it for a very good friend of mine. I had done a snowmobile themed wall mural for him in the past at his previous location, but when he moved to his present one, he of course had to leave the mural behind. I rendered this painting from a photo he found in a magazine and it's painted on a 4' by 6' piece of masonite. I'm very proud that he has it prominently displayed in his auto detailing business. Bushnell Auto Detailing in Leominster, MA. In my humble opinion he's the best around, doing work of the highest quality.

MOO!
Her name is Daisy!
This statue can be seen on display at Meola's Ice Cream in West Boylston MA. Originally, this old fiberglass cow statue was full of cracks and as you can see, heavily vandalized with purple spray paint. I repaired some cracks and holes in it before painting and the owner of Meola's asked for a style change to make the cow look feminine and friendly. I think the "after" shots show quite a "makeover".

A CHEVY NOVA DRAGSTER
Scroll down to the last picture of this dragster if you would like to know what is special about it.

The headlights and grille are painted on. The nose of the car is a fiberglass shell!

CAMARO DRAGSTER
In the following pictures of this Chevy Camaro dragster that I painted, I'd like to show you the technique I used to create the "faux" grille and headlights on the dragster above. I hope you will find it kind of interesting. The first photo is just to show you the car itself. Beautiful dragster, isn't it?
And so it begins, by masking off the grille components with fine line tape.
Paint in the grille area black and then begin pulling off the masking tape.

Mask off the headlight and parking lights.
Airbrush the lights. As you can see I have plenty of photos to use as reference material.
This picture shows that I've hand painted the grille bars that I masked off earlier, with silver.
I airbrushed the shadows under the horizontal bars with black to give them the proper 3-D look that the actual grille has.
A hand painted re-creation of the stock emblem. You can also see where I have begun to add airbrushing to the "chrome" outer rim of the grille.
A view of the complete nose before unmasking. I haven't yet finished airbrushing the "chrome"
The nose unmasked. Notice I haven't painted the chrome headlight bezels...yet.
A close up of the finished airbrushing around the outer rim of the grille.
The chrome headlight bezel.

Just a couple of close ups below.

Finished! (the last of too many pictures of this car!)

 CUSTOM HELMET DESIGN
A helmet that I airbrushed, hand painted, sprayed with clear coat, wet sanded, and hand rubbed out with rubbing and polishing compound to get that "wet look" shine.

JUNIOR DRAGSTER
Here is a junior dragster that the owner of A&B Tire in Leominster, MA hired me to paint. It has a top speed of around 70 miles per hour on a 1/8th mile drag strip and was driven by a boy about 12-13 years old.
His nickname of course, is Snake!

SNAKES SISTER RACES TOO!
Another junior dragster... This is a picture of Snakes sister, Heather's car. Yes, that's right, a brother and sister racing team! Even cooler, the cars were built by their father!

ELVIS LIVES!
This is a race car hood. I copied a magazine photo that my customer provided. First I airbrushed the picture to look like a black & white photo. Then I added in the color over that, also with an airbrush. This approach helps provide brightness and dimension. The last picture shows the hood clearcoated and mounted on the race car, with the addition of the hand pinstriped flames.

ANOTHER OLD TIN SIGN REPLICA
This is a hand painted reproduction of an old sign that a customer had me do for him. It's about 12" x 18" in size reproduced to replace a badly damaged and rusted original sign.

VW CUSTOM DETAILING
Just a little whimsy on the side of one of those "flower power" cars.

A "SMALL" PAINTING
The painting of the eagle below is on the side of the hood of a Freightliner truck. It is about 7" high by 10" wide. It is painted with a brush with just a little bit of airbrushing here and there to help add shading. I like to call the pictorials like this that I do "smalls".
